Inspired by ant’s pheromones, Phonoculos is a soundscape environment enhancing awareness of others over time. As a response to the ongoing digital as well as biological shifts in communication networks and perception, this project explores the idea of learning from other animals how to navigate in a non-linear reality. In the installation, participants are invited to experience an alternative perception of space and time, moving mainly by sound rather than sight. By recording the voices of people moving trough the room, participants enter into zones of sound left by previous interactions. The participants are invited to explore the different sounds in the space, as well as recording their own sounds for the people entering next. By wearing the Phonoculos helmet the participant’s vision is diminished, while acoustic awareness is enhanced.
